At times,Miley Cyrusmay seem like an alien sent to Earth in order to teach us all about the wonders of rainbows, glitter and generally letting one’s freak flag fly. But the pop star isn’t only all pasties and mesh apparel; she can also be very grown-up and sophisticated when the situation calls for it. Though that aspect of her personality may not make quite as many appearances as her prosthetics-baring, barely-clothed stage persona, Miley let her softer side shine through in her latest cover interview withElle Magazinein which she gets real about her on-again, off-again (now on-again!) fiancé, giving back, and encouraging others to be likeBernie Sanders.
For a star who loves to share her life on social media, Cyrus feels the exact opposite about doing so on a red carpet ever again. Why the about face? “[A year ago] I had to do the [A Very Murray Christmas] premiere, and I will never do a red carpet again,” she said. “Why, when people are starving, am I on a carpet that’s red? Because I’m ‘important’? Because I’m ‘famous’? That’s not how I roll. It’s like a skit—it’s likeZoolander.”

But besides, who has time to attend one award show after the next when you just signed on to be the newest member of The Voice‘s star-studded panel of judges? When asked about her coaching style compared to that of her castmates, Miley seems to approach her new role with an equally altruistic spirit, saying, “…I don’t want this to come off the wrong way, but I’m going to tell my contestants: Be Bernie Sanders. Be the person people want and love. Don’t worry about the masses. That’s how you make a memorable moment. Let people talk about it.”

Miley also talked toElleabout another former Disney child star, expressing her concern and support for her friendBritney Spears. She told the magazine, “[My manager Adam Leber] works with her; we’ve stayed close because of that. She’s a little distant in her world. I just want Britney to be happy. Every time she puts out new music, I’m like, ‘Is that what she wants to be doing? Or does she just want to chill?’ She’s looking so good right now, and looking happy.”

And while it may seem like the pop star is a social media pro, sharing every detail of her life on her Instagram account, Cyrus admits that she still hasn’t quite mastered Snapchat. “I don’t know how to use it,” she confesses, “I feel like I’ll be an old lady that’s too held back, because I don’t keep up with it. I’m not on Pokémon Go. [This morning]Liamwoke up and tried to go to the car wash because it was a—what do you call it?—PokéSpot. Like, ‘Got to go find them and catch them all! Ahh!'”
