In anewCosmopolitancover story interview, the singer and actress opened up about her safe approach to sex, thoughts on relationships and why she doesn’t use dating apps.
Asked to provide a sex tip for the publication, Carpenter, 24, advised, “I mean, at the end of the day, my whole thing right now is, whatever you do, don’t get pregnant. That’s the way I’m living my life. So that’s my sex tip. Be smart. Use protection.”

The musician says the outros (which feature lyrics such as “When you go down under, do you miss me? / He’s so big I felt it in my kidney / Screamed so loud they heard it here in Sydney") have done more than just make her laugh.
“It’s funny too, writing the outros, because I feel like I’ve learned a lot more about sexuality through writing those than people think,” said Carpenter. “I think people think I’m just obnoxiously horny, when in reality, writing them comes from the ability to not be fearful of your sexuality as opposed to just not being able to put it down.”
She then offered up more advice for approaching sex in a healthy way. “Do whatever feels most comfortable to you. You can be curious and ask questions, but a lot of it is just going to be you learning yourself,” added Carpenter. “So do whatever makes you feel the most comfortable and safe.”
As far as her own romantic relationships, the star — who’s dating actorBarry Keoghan— toldCosmopolitanmost of her dating experiences have been a result of “fate.”
“I know that’s super broad, but I don’t actively look for it. The relationships that I actually want to put my energy into have to be so interesting or invigorating because they take me away from the other things I love,” explained Carpenter. “So yeah, it’s fun and it’s messy. I think I’m still just at this place where I’m really enjoying the newness of all of it.”

One place she’s not looking for a romantic partner? Dating apps.
“I have one app, and I usually just never open it,” said Carpenter. “But there would be times where I would just want to see that other people exist. I know that sounds weird. Because when you’re on tour for a very long time, you’re just like, oh my God, there’s no one around.”
