Joey Lawrenceknows that he andSamantha Cope, his wife of one year, have an interesting meet-cute story.
“We did this big thriller [My Husband’s Secret Brother] that my brother Andrew directed for Lifetime, and I met her on the set that movie,” says the formerBlossomstar, 47. “Which is so crazy to me. I’d never dated somebody that I’d worked with before. That was just very, very much out of the ordinary for me.”
So did Lawrence and Cope, 35, play brother and sister? Onscreen lovers?
“I was her killer,” he says with a laugh. “Well, I was her lover — and also her killer.”
Lawrence says he’s thrilled with the way life is going these days: He and his two brothers have a very successful podcast (Brotherly Love), he’s back at work after the strike finally ended and he’s enjoying life as a new dad again.
“It’s keeping me youngandit’s aging me,” he jokes of hisyoungest daughter, Dylan Rose. “But the kids are great.” (He’s also dad to daughter Charleston, 17, and Liberty, 13, with his ex-wife Chandie Yawn-Nelson.)
“Look,life is a beautiful, sometimes crazy-unexpected journey, and the ups and downs are real, and I’m very thankful that people that I love are around me and that there’s health around us.”
Lawrence stars in a new ad forVinFast electric cars, and “I love this car,” he says of the new line of EVs.
“It doesn’t feel like an electric car, which to me is my only beef with a lot of them. They’re like golf carts. They just don’t have any soul. They have the technology, but they drive like a golf carts. This car actually drives like a car. It actually feels like a car inside,” he says. “I like an interior that feels like an interior, not just like a seat with a screen. And they’re so fast, and they just drive really well.”
As for the spot asking him to say his most famous phrase (“Whoa!"), Lawrence says he has no problem with it at all.
“There’s enough time passed now where it just makes sense,” he says. “You see John Travolta doingSaturday Night Fever. So you get some distance between you and these iconic moments and then it’s okay. It’s great to relive those moments as an adult and to understand it still means something to a lot of people, which is pretty cool,” he says.
Plus, having teenage daughters means he’s well aware the ’90s are having a renaissance.
“My 13 year old and her friends are all watchingGrey’s AnatomyandFresh PrinceandFriends,” he says. “There’s such nostalgia for the ’90s.”
He adds, “It really was the golden age. We had everything we needed. And there was no social media!”
