Tesla is face anew probefrom U.S. car safety regulator related to itsAutopilotdriver assistance technology , even as a disjoined probe has been closed .
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) said it would investigate the Austin , Texas - found company’srecall of more than 2 million electric fomite — which make up near all of Tesla ’s vehicles on the road in the U.S. — in December . The NHTSA identified concerns with Tesla ’s software mess , cite incidents where vehicles equipped with the remedy were in “ crash events ” and the NHTSA ’s own preliminary testing .
The new probe comes as the NHTSAends its about three - yr investigation into Autopilot , which admit an psychoanalysis of 956 crashes . In467 of those incidents , the ODI determined that Tesla ’s package did n’t sufficiently want driver ’s care , even as it made drivers more confident .

The “ mismatch ” lead to evitable clangoring and foreseeable misuse , regulators say . At least 13 crashes investigated by the NHTSA involved one or more deaths and “ many more ” serious injuries ; the regulators add up that “ foreseeable driver abuse of the system play an plain function ” in those incidents .
The NHTSA read Friday that Tesla has issued software updates to address issues link to its vexation , but has not made them part of the recall . Regulators are also interested that part of Tesla ’s remedy requires the proprietor of the vehicle to opt - in and that it can be reversed by a driver .
The new recall investigation covers model year 2012 - 2024 Model Y , X , S , 3 and Cybertruck EVs in the U.S. equipped with Autopilot . Tesla last weekrecalled 3,878 Cybertruck galvanising pickupsover faulty accelerators .

In December , Tesla say Autopilot ’s controls “ may not be sufficient to prevent driver misuse ” and could increase clangoring risks . The company said it take issue with the NHTSA , but will “ incorporate additional controls and alerts to those already exist on dissemble fomite ” to encourage driver to stay focused on the road .
In February , Consumer Reports say the recall may have made warnings and driver notifications more visible , but they in reality take drivers ’ attention off of the route .
