Here ’s the most elysian instant from last night ’s Chuck , in which Sarah thinks she ’s sending an S.O.S. to Chuck , and Morgan thinks she ’s making an erotic connexion . Rrrrroww ! We ’re beaming Chuck is back , even though this was n’t the greatest episode .
Spoilers beforehand …
Mostly , this was a pretty firm time of year opener , which pose up the new Chuck position quo — the CIA have rebuilt the Buy More , which was blown up at the end of the late season , except now it ’s like a crack spy foot with trap door and a big red button that consider the U.S. to Defcon One and everything . And even though Chuck has assure his babe Ellie that he ’ll quit the undercover agent biz , he ’s get a substance from his late dad secern him to seek for his missing mom . Chuck and Morgan attempt to look for for Chuck ’s mom on their own , but this winds up involving them in Sarah and Casey ’s investigation into a Russian blazonry dealer , Volkoff , and they all scent up in Moscow , where Chuck has to save Sarah ’s life .

But I have to be fair : This episode felt a bit strike and lack to me . There were long stretches where I feel the show was just lam a mo . There were a few reasons for this , include : 1 ) a more - than - usually - formulate plotline ( Chuck tells Morgan about his mom , but not Sarah ? ) ; 2 ) some comedic bit that fall flat , like Harry Dean Stanton being willing to shoot down for honorable dumplings ; 3 ) Olivia Munn , who is a perfectly ok performing artist but just not an player or comedian ; 4 ) The deficiency of anybody to keep the story “ ground , ” like Big Mike , Jeff , Lester , or Ellie ( except the last human action . ) 5 ) Most of all , they ’ve go under it up so that Chuck is now the good undercover agent EVAR and everybody need him to do it , and it ’s the only affair he likes doing , so yet another “ Chuck quits the spy living ” floor felt like one too many .
That say , there were several with child minute in the episode , let in the aforesaid “ sexting ” scene . I also liked Chuck and Morgan criss - get over the country just to end up back in L.A. Chuck ’s risky job interviews were also tremendous , and I like that the secret “ Tangiers ” strategy that Chuck and Morgan always resort to consists of just run away really tight . Morgan was mostly cute , and Casey had a few smashing moments of snarkitude . And I have intercourse Chuck ’s mammy ( Sarah Connor ! ) claim down all of the bad bozo at the end , even if it did make me wonder how they ’d been keep her prisoner for a dozen years .
All in all , it was a playfulness drive , despite the stuff I note earlier . time of year openers are often among the weakest episode of ongoing show , because they have to do all the sound lifting of setting up a novel status quo and catching ( or deflect ) all the balls that the time of year last allow for in the air .

I do have a longer - term worry though — I wonder if this show is going to wander up too far from its etymon . In early year , the Buy More was actually the place where Chuck and Morgan worked , and even though Chuck ( and later Morgan ) had this mythical undercover agent lifetime waiting for them downstairs in the Castle , they still had to deal with the oppressiveness and alienation of act in the retail sector — trade with annoying customers , cause objectionable customer - table service rating competition imposed by middle direction , etc . And the “ fish out of water ” thing was part of what made this show so special , with Chuck clearly not cut out for spying . Of course , spying has been Chuck ’s component for a long time , but now Morgan seems at home in the spy existence as well . And their work , the Buy More , is never going to be anything more than a front , where their participation will be a carrying into action to fool any foe spies that might be enquire . So you have to marvel how this show will stay put ground . But here ’s hoping next week ’s installment brings back more of the non - spy form , and we see a more balanced outing .
