After the diminishing takings of the last five ( yes , there were five ) transformer motion-picture show , you ’d be correct to have some trepidation when it comes to the latest film in the enfranchisement , Bumblebee . But there ’s some good news . The top executive that be , pun specify , have redress the ship , delivering a celluloid that trims away the fat of those premature moving-picture show , leaving a compendious , character - driven , activity - pack film .
In fact , the first five moment of Bumblebee is the Transformers movie lover have been dream about constantly . It ’s put on Cybertron and features a war between Autobots and Decepticons , with muckle of cameos from the Generation 1 Transformers that made the dealership popular in the Eighties . Bumblebee is there too , but he escapes to judge to find a place for the Autobots to hide . He terminate up on Earth and , through another large action scene , is ill damage , leaving him without his voice or memory . It ’s on Earth where the actual story begins .
At the core of Bumblebee are two characters : Bumblebee , of course , a lone soldier far by from his planet , and Charlie ( Hailee Steinfeld ) , a malcontent teenager whose domain shattered when she lost her father . Bee and Charlie have both lost their families and , as they meet and become friends , each will start to reconstruct the form of sexual love and trustingness that ’s so important to all of us .

Now , if that all sound kind of goofy andun - Transformer - ythen you ’re on the right track . Most of Bumblebee concentre on Charlie and Bee becoming friends and cause into problem . For much of the movie , Bee is like a new ducky . He ’s not exactly sure why he ’s on Earth , what he is , or what he ’s supposed to do . So he just kind of bumbles about , which is appropriate , but does get a small bit boring . On the other paw , it perfectly parallels where Charlie is in her sprightliness . She ’s 18 and uncertain about what to do and what comes next for her .
As the film progresses , both characters trust on one other to endeavor to find their place in the cosmos . For Charlie , that ’s dealing with her family . For Bee , it ’s a second more complicated . After all , this is a Transformers movie , and while you could make the motion-picture show about a golem and a teen coming of age , there also needs to be giant robots alter into cars and planes and perplex the shite out of each other .
Bumblebee is directed by Travis Knight , who most people know as the fountainhead of Laika , the stop - motion animation companythat made Coraline , ParaNorman , and Kubo , which Knight also lead . Bumblebee is his first live - activeness film and while he balances the robot war and human relationship well , it ’s not without some miscues . Though the film is under two hour ( which is exciting itself coming off the Bay film ) , the center section gets a little repetitive . Scenes of Bee and Charlie getting into hijinks are precious but overly abundant and at times a little too goofy . Also , the activeness is filled with singular cheats , where character survive after being shot at point blank range or do n’t vote down each other when they clear should or would .

Plus , while Bumblebee is fill with plenteousness of tumid , automaton - on - automaton action sequences , they are missing a little of that larger - than - living scope we ’ve come to await from the transformer movies . Mostly , that ’s because the moving-picture show really only stars three Transformers : Bee , as well as the DecepticonsShatter ( voiced by Angela Bassett ) and Dropkick ( sound by Justin Theroux ) , who are on Earth hunt for him . Other Transformers factor into the plotbut , for the most part , it ’s just those three . While this makes sense — this is a film about one Transformer , not the whole race — it does draw the action to be dial back a footling bit .
However , the smaller stakes also make sense from a story standpoint . Bumblebee is set 20 years before the issue of Michael Bay ’s 2007 film , so this story could n’t make activeness that would raise up the persistence between the meter . It would be weird if a dozen transformer fight back across San Francisco 20 yr earlier and yet , Shia LaBeoufwas still shocked to see them . No , thing had to be keep hold in , which has its summation and minuses .
The Eighties setting provide real look and nostalgia , something that softens some of the other way out of the film . Knight has filled Bumblebee not just with relics of the Eighties like Pong and Alf , but a retro look , sound , and feel , remindful of the Amblin movies of the metre . The film has a slightly gritty cinematography ( good manners of Enrique Chediak ) , a relatable artlessness to the script ( thanks to Christina Hodson ) , and of course piles of Eighties music , much of which is crucial to drive the tale forward . Not to mention Knight ’s transformer have a more simple , recognizable design than the previous movies , so you really feel like you ’re watching a Transformers cartoon from the Eighties . All those things make Bumblebee feel more like a John Hughes flick with Michael Bay effects rather than a Michael Bay film with a John Hughes story .

None of this would work if both Bumblebee and Charlie were n’t catch character but , thankfully , they are . Thanks to somestunning optical effects workfrom Industrial Light and Magic , Bee ’s is incredibly expressive . He does n’t speak but you always can tell what he ’s think and feeling just by looking at his heart . Then there ’s Steinfeld , who beautifully balances the angst of being a adolescent , the struggles of a busted category , and a budding friendly relationship with a elephantine robot alien . She ’s seldom been good than she is in this film , and it makes everyone around her — include actor like John Cena , Pamela Adlon , and Jorge Lendeborg Jr.—raise their games too .
After five Transformers movie that somehow arrive biggerbut also bad , it makes sense that going small makes Bumblebee work . It has lots of expert action , coolheaded robots in camouflage , and a dynamite orifice to scratch the itching for Transformers fans . But it also has an ample amount of heart to make the story accessible people who do n’t experience Optimus Prime from Amazon Prime . I think the film in all likelihood could have benefited with being just a little more Bay - tastic in its action , but the rest of it works so well , it ’s trifling . If you like Eighties moving picture , descend of long time stories , or giant golem scrap , Bumblebee is for you .
Bumblebee open on December 21 .
