io9 : Tell me a little flake about how this task first came together . Where did Self / Made starting time ?
Mat Groom : Well , ( Self / Made editor in chief ) Kyle Higgins and I have been protagonist for a few class , and we speak tarradiddle constantly . He was familiar with a few of my smaller project , and asked if I had ever view doing an ongoing serial . I told him I would dead love to , and I very promptly wrote the script for what is now the first issue of Self / Made — though I think at first it was call “ Heir Presumptive ” ? Which is an utterly fearsome name , so I ’m very relieved we amount up with something good .

After that , Kyle told me he ’d like to take it on as his first editorial task , and he sent me some portfolio oeuvre of artists he was intimate with … and I just completely fall down in love with Eduardo ’s work . Eduardo and I had quite a few Australia - to - Brazil Skype chats to help flesh out the world for the rest of the serial — this add up very easily , because we got along like a star sign on fire ; it turns out we have very similar gustatory sensation and interests . And then we were off to the subspecies !
Eduardo Ferigato : Yeah , Kyle put Mat and I together , and he initiate by sending me the script for the first issuing . As soon as I had finished reading it , I was crazy - excited to protrude drawing . The news report and the universe of discourse that Mat make , I light in love with it . So together , along with Marcelo Costa ( who is the incredible colorist on our serial ) , we raise a pitch for Image , and they agreed to publish our taradiddle ! We could n’t think it when Kyle told us the news .
io9 : What can you tell me about the design process for Amala , and how did she number to be the focal character of the serial ?

ostler : Honestly , I hate to be that guy , but … Amala came pretty much full - form , at least as far as the scripting went . I know I wanted to enjoin a story about searching for purpose when you palpate you have your whole life dictate for you . So that meant a champion who is whole dedicated to her theatrical role , enough to have stick with it for her full liveliness , but also someone with a lot of internalized aspirations , and the conclusion to chase those aspirations when the chance arises . From there , working with Eduardo to formulate visually … that actually helped to crystalize Amala ’s characterization further .
Ferigato : While some of the character in Self / Made tire big , hulking , alloy armor , we wanted to give Amala ( and the other members of her people ) something simple , humble , and light . This helped us convey the sort of life these masses live — they’re not big on ego or demonstration , because they ’re all focused on the uncomplicated - but - important chore of protect the realm . It also informed her combat style . Amala ca n’t rely on armor to protect her , so she has to be truehearted , confident , and adaptive . In many ways , Amala speaks more through her action ( particularly when she ’s fighting ) than she does through words .
io9 : This is a series that plays with a lot of fantastical image — maybe this is more particularly for Eduardo , but what aesthetic inspired you for Amala ’s home land as we see it in this first issue ?

Ferigato : There ’s a bit ofLord of the Rings , a moment ofGame of Thrones , a bit of For Honor , which I was playing a lot when I was first developing the series … but I drew upon pretty much all of the fancy movies and games that I ’ve watched or playact in my life , in one room or another . But as we move past issue one , we ’ll be going to very different places … so we ’ll be exploring many different aesthetics . It´s a huge macrocosm that we are creating here , which has been a big challenge for me as an artist . Every progeny demands a lot of research . But I can´t get into details yet , or Mathew will shoot down me !
stableman : You joke , but I was just about to jump in there with a “ DON’T SAY TOO MUCH ! ”
io9 : speak of the script ’s esthetic , the teaser trailer hints that as Amala comes nigher to encounter her Supreme Being , you ’ll be introduce some more sci - fi design ethos . What describe you to wed together science fiction and phantasy like this in the first lieu ? Can readers expect more of a stress on the fantasy nature , or those sci - fi underpinnings ?

Groom : As much as Self / Made is a deeply personal , intimate story about the relationship between God and creation , the framing of that bring itself to explore — actually almost demands that you explore — the breadth of all creation . So … we’re going to do that ! Obviously there ’s a raft of phantasy - inspire visuals here , and as you identified we ’ll be hitting some sci - fi inspired worlds very soon … and after that , we ’re headed for what I venture I ’d call “ non - traditional ” phantasy . So we ’ll be all over the sci - fi / fancy spectrum . I mean , c’mon — face at Eduardo and Marcelo ’s piece of work , and just try and say me you do n’t want to see them render literally anything you’re able to guess .
io9 : [ Image is ] citingWestworldas a key inspiration on the series — which brings with it connotations of the “ mystery boxful ” style of storytelling . Is this a series where you want readers to always be questioning what they ’re envision from the get - go ?
Groom : If I can peel back the drapery a bit here , both Kyle and the good family at Image have been using Westworld as a full reference work head ( and I ’m sure it is ! ) , but to be dead honest I still have n’t drive around to Westworld yet , so I ca n’t speak to that in special myself .

In terms of mystery box - stylus storytelling , absolutely . It ’s important to us to surprise readers , to make certain they feel like there ’s always more to discover . But I conceive you’re able to return into a bit of a trap , as a God Almighty , in crafting surprises for the saki of surprise , and questions without answers . We ’re dictated to ply answers almost as quickly as we provided questions , and to make certain surprises are in service of reference .
io9 : There ’s a lot of interesting storytelling moments in this issue , like the one we ’re pay off to show off here , with the company ’s encounters with the Skrellian elders . Is that a storytelling trick you want to keep playing with — the melodic theme of seeing tantrum represent out multiple times — exit forrard ?
ostler : You ’ll see a act more of that towards the end of egress one , and you ’ll also find out why that ’s happening — but after that , no . I suspect readers would get a bit tired of that trick , and Eduardo would add up to begrudge have to revisit fit constantly .

Having said that , I remember it ’d be fair to say that I ’m quite fond of experimental storytelling techniques , so you certainly should n’t expect everything to play out but and linearly from here on out .
io9 : As I advert before , another handsome theme in the book is Amala getting to add up brass to confront with her Creator during her quest . What can you distinguish us about how this brush challenges her ?
bridegroom : In a lot of ways , Amala is a straightforward fictional character . She knows what she wants , and she does what she need to do to get it . But that intend when she becomes aware of godlike forces , when she realizes there ’s a higher authority dictating her attitude in the globe … it escape from her to her essence . Her government agency is underlying to her individuality , and when that ’s brought into question , everything unravels .

And I think that ’s very relatable — because we all have to grapple with that , at some point in our life . We all want to have a “ use , ” but we also desire to be schoolmaster of our own luck , and those two desire are inherently contradictory . And because it ’s comics , those contradictions will be expressed using dragons and Ghost King and shoot - outs .
io9 : Finally , It ’s safe to say that there ’s a bit more going on in Self / Made than it seems at first . What do you hope people will take from this first issue ?
Groom : I hope that the primary takeout food is that we ’re reckon to pack a whole circle into each and every issue . Each one is patently a part of the grander story , but every issue tells a story . Every issue takes you on a new journey . I think readers deserve that .

Self / Made # 1 attain shelves this December .
