Four children and one adult were tragically killed in a house fire in West Virginia on Saturday.

Areleasefrom the West Virginia Fire Marshal’s office identified the victims as a 28-year-old man and four children under the age of 5 — with the youngest victim aged 1. The names of the children and the man have not yet been released.

When fire crews arrived at the scene on Saturday morning the house appeared to be fully engulfed in flames, the Mathias Volunteer Fire Department toldLive 5 News.

“Five individuals have died as a result of a fire in Hardy County, WV early this morning,” the fire marshal’s office stated in the release. “Hardy County 911 received the call for a house fire on Woods Edge Road near the community of Mathias, WV. 1 adult female was able to escape the fire and has been transported to a local medical facility.”

“The victims are being transported to the WV Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy and positive identification. The cause of the fire will be ruled undetermined due to the severe amount of damage to the structure.  No smoke alarms were found among the debris,” the release concluded.

The tragic incident comes days after it was reported that two children died in ahouse fire in Minnesotaon Jan. 3, after being initially rescued with five other victims, who were left critically injured.

Four children were also killed in afire in a home in Connecticuton Tuesday evening.

During apress conferenceWednesday, Connecticut State Police Trooper First Class Pedro Muniz said the fire occurred at 44 Quality Ave., around 10:20 p.m., and that multiple victims were rescued, including one adult.

“At this time, it does not appear to be criminal in nature,” Muniz told reporters about the investigation into the origin of the fire.
