This weekend , the cosmos meet the whiskey - drinking , super - powered Hell ’s Kitchen investigator known as Jessica Jones . She ’s the star of the second Netflix Marvel superhero show , leading into the squad - up series The Defenders , and many people spend their weekend on the couch , devouring all 13 episodes .
We did just that — and overall , we absolutely sleep with the show . create by and bring about by Melissa Rosenberg , Jessica Jones is entirely different from everything Marvel has done , but also fills a nice new niche in that world . Still , there are definitely a few consequence , so we come up with 12 things we love about the show and four that we do n’t .

Hearing the characters imprecate , or follow them vigorously have sexuality , lets us know anything can happen on this show , which is a welcome change for a Marvel property . People can die , heroes can turn on each other , or villains can show their sensitive sides . Nothing is impossible — and that ups the intensity and drama .
This also separates Jessica from the rest of her fellow superheroes . Tony Stark thinks he ’s a badass with tragical flaw , but he ’s also a billionaire who barely curse . Jessica actually is a badass with tragic flaw . She has a shit flat , drinks cheap whisky , wears the same wearing apparel almost every 24-hour interval , and still manages to do her caper with prance . That hard - seethe character makes us eager to learn more about her , but also take a crap her a morsel more relatable . You know mass like Jessica Jones , but you do n’t know anyone like Captain America .
As we enter not only just Phase 3 of the Marvel Universe , but the head start of DC ’s flood of pic and television receiver shows , you remain to hear a caboodle about “ superhero weariness . ” get it on who else is get trite of superheroes ? Jessica Jones clearly owes its source to noir , but Jessica ditch the usual private - center investigating schtick for Kilgrave ’s mindgames — although , if the closing of the season is any reading , the detective poppycock could very well take over when we next see her . It ’s an natural process tarradiddle , like so many comic Good Book adaptation , except there are n’t that many overly - choreographed and stylized set man . It ’s a drama , except where it ’s in darkness funny . The fact that the show ca n’t be well put in a boxful makes it more than the nub of its piece .
David Tennant ’s Kilgrave is , without a doubt , one of the most effective villains in any superhero movies or TV to date . It ’s an emotionally charged bit that once again delivers that sickly flavor of Leslie Townes Hope and intellect as Kilgrave confronts the people who made him . A consequence that immediately go down apart when his mother tries to jab him , and Kilgrave wing off in a passion , conduct to her end and his escape . Marvel has done evenhandedly complex , understandable villains before — but Kilgrave ’s wickedness is amplified so much more by having these few moments of almost - redemption , a fine line between justifying his actions and giving you a moment of Leslie Townes Hope .
Jessica Jones has a routine of theatrical role , who are n’t Jessica or Kilgrave , that are amply realized and marvellously acted . Trish Walker ( Rachael Taylor ) is both Jessica ’s best friend and a hero all on her own . She has a in full realized arc , from alienated best friend to the person Jessica trusts enough to bring with her to the final confrontation with Kilgrave . Even as a supporting character , Colter does a hunky-dory job of let us see what his Luke Cage is all about , ahead of us getting to see a good deal more of him on his own in Luke Cage next year .
We could have done without draw his dead married woman to Kilgrave and Jessica so intimately , but when John Cage vanishes at the very end of the season , it lead us wanting to see a muckle more of him , sooner rather than later .

They portion out just enough to make sensation for people who just met . How did Jessica get her power ? “ Accident . ” Luke ? “ Experiment . ” That ’s it . It works really well .
While Jessica and Luke ’s relationship is just begin , Hogarth and her wife , Wendy , provide an exercise of a human relationship that ’s stop . The television camera then cuts to a shot from inside the sink drain , so we see the roach go in , then the focussing racks back to see Jessica . Are you kidding me ? That ’s not your typical TV play charge .
Jessica Jones is filled with stuff like this . From the canted angles on the face of it hanging off the sides of Hell ’s Kitchen building , to overhead shots of taxi cabs that find like something out of a ‘ 70s detective drama , almost all of the exteriors make terrific economic consumption of the New York City setting . Deep focus is used to accent the veridical life positioning and whenever a skyline can be worked into a shot , it is . The interiors are n’t half forged either . The cockroach shot is one example , Will Simpson ( Wil Traval ) walking off from an indoor fire in slow motion is another . Seemingly every shot is composed and exposed to make Jones feel like something truly significant .
Unlike its predecessor Daredevil , which steady built and construct to its singular climactic conclusion , Jessica Jones ’ pace and narration ebbs and flows — a move that would otherwise be frustrating , but is aid by some really fantastic “ Wait , what ! ? ” plot twist . that keep you hooked . The early capture attempt on Kilgrave by Trish , Jessica and Simpson in “ AKA The Sandwich economize Me ” is so well done that it almost mistake your mind that it ’s far too early for the heroes to corner the baddie .

Marvel properties always leave you with questions . They popularise the end - credits sequence for just this reasonableness . Jessica Jones does that too , but those questions rarely take away from any important data in the main narrative . At the conclusion of the season , we ’re left wondering how Jessica got her ability , what happened when she tried to be a hero , what is IGH — and then , of row , how Jones will finally fit in with Daredevil .
But none of those motion are things that bug you after you finish watching . Each is at least teased , if not set up perfectly for season two , and that take in Jones feel like a much more concluded tale than we ’re used to getting from Marvel . apparently everything that needed to be wind up for Jessica to further adopt her power to be a hero , pose up her family relationship with Luke , and to defeat Kilgrave , are wrapped up nicely .
But We Don’t Like That…
The population of New York City is over 8 million people . So what are the betting odds that , of all the masses in New York , not only is Luke Cage ’s wife Reva linked to Kilgrave ’s origins , but that it ’s Jessica Jones who vote out her ? It ’s a perfect example of one of those incense connexion in TV and movies that — of course — set up up proficient story engagement , but are so unconvincing you ca n’t help oneself but feel like it ’s kind of lazy .
Now , you could say because Luke and Jessica both have powers , there ’s some kind of deeper cosmic connection between them , but there ’s no grounds of that . Jessica Jones is a direction too prime show to go with any variety of larger , metaphysical explanation . Instead , we ’re allow for with an understandable , albeit frustrating , selection in the narrative .
When Will Simpson first shows up as a pig Kilgrave sent to kill Trish , he ’s just the latest of Kilgrave ’s pawns . And we ’re probably speculate to finger bad about his twilight . About how tangling with Kilgrave send him back to the experimental oral contraceptive course of study he used to be in . But , he go right smart too chop-chop from ally who differ with Trish and Jessica about their methods and end goal to complete dickwad who ’s willing to kill good people to get to Kilgrave . We wanted to sense for him the agency we did for Slade in Arrow . Unfortunately , Jessica Jones did n’t do enough to make that happen .
Detective Oscar Clemmons is on the nose the same character as Daredevil ’s Ben Urich . He ’s an old authority frame , who may be one of the only secure stake in his place of employment . Although on the whole we loved much of Jessica Jones ’ extensive suffer cast , we could n’t help but experience a bit steamed when the time of year stepped away from the main write up between Jessica and Kilgrave to expound on some of these groups . It ’s a will to the main arc that these scenes , even the compelling ones , had us tap our feet waiting to get back to the main event , but there were definitely some that palpate like they ultimately spiraled out of control , but to delay the independent story from moving forward .
The ongoing confluence of the Kilgrave support group — specially the end of the arc with Robin convincing them all to attack Jessica — emphatically got that way . And the short , largely pointless subplot between Trish and her female parent ( that just sense like it was setting up IGH as something to wait at in season two ) in the last couple of episodes just felt like unnecessary filler , especially in the closing curtain . Jessica Jones is Jess ’ floor , and the more time we spent aside from it , the more impatient we got .
